Colour: deep ruby red, sometimes with purple/violet hues.
Aromas: dark/red fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant), sometimes wild berries, violets; hints of spice, maybe a little vanilla if oak is involved.
Palate: full-bodied or medium-full; well-structured but reasonably drinkable young; balance between tannins, freshness, fruit. Some bitterness (a trait of “negro - amaro”) rounds out the finish. Alcohol & maturation: often around 13-14%, usually fermented in steel, sometimes some oak ageing (depending on producer)
pairings: Grilled or roasted red meats. Strong cheeses, or aged cheeses. Perhaps tomato-based pasta dishes. Also nice just with hearty cold cuts or charcuterie
